Summer Series Race 3–2018-19

Summer Series Race 3–2018-19

With 15 boats in the main fleet and a couple of Opti’s on the water it was a great day with a breeze to test. It was also a day that brought everything; boat on boat action, a sinking, a walk in the mangroves, flexible attention to the course, a capsize and abandon ship. Even Team Effort which left the fleet in its wake for both scratch and handicap wasn’t without some gear challenges.

Summer Series Race 1 – 2018-19

The competition proper started this weekend for the 2018-19 season. The turnout was good with 13 boats. In light airs it was Footprint once again showing its speed and holding off the challenge to take line honours. Pollyanna (sailing as the club boat while under going as face lift), took the handicap gun.

2018 Joe Manifold Cup

With the promise of a lively breeze, a good turn of 11 boats was achieved. The race conditions were great with fairly constant pressure. Team Effort reminded us why he is on a scratch handicap, leaving all in his wake to take the gun. Incognito took the honours on corrected times.
Season 2018-19 – Shakedown #2

Season 2018-19 – Shakedown #2

Being the first morning after daylight saving kicked in (and, I suspect, the morning of a certain Rugby test match), a slightly smaller smaller fleet of 7 boats fronted. A bit of a delay until the breeze kicked in and then the light breeze splitting the fleet by the main channel to Mangroves. This turned out to be a rare race where scratch and handicap results were identical with Sarnia waiting until the last couple of hundred metres to take a 3 second win.

Season 2018-19 Opens–Shakedown #1

Raring to get back into it we started the season with a nice sized fleet of 8 Frostbites and 1 sunburst (single handed). Hopefully not a sign of the season to come with the fleet splitting into two. Half the fleet decided that the course setter was an idiot and sailed their own course. Or maybe they are trying to pad their handicap.
Winter Series Race 5 - 2018

Winter Series Race 5 - 2018

On a shocking day 7 boats braved torrential rain for the sake of a sail. Footprint showed the rocket she is in light winds to lead from start to finish. Need I say that it was Limeburner with the handicap honours. A learning moment was taken by Kitiri on the finer points of the port-starboard rule and the requirement for the 720 penalty turn!

Winter Series Race 2 - 2018

Race two of the Winter series had another good turnout of eleven boats in a nice breeze. Shadze took the novel approach of being on the start line on the gun. He nearly held out to take the gun but was pipped by Matitai for the win. A close race with seconds seperating the first 5 finishers! Family Affair took the honours in the handicap stakes.

Winter Series Race 1 - 2018

Race one of the Winter series started with a good turnout of eleven boats and it was a bit wintery. But not too wintery for Sarnia to go for a swim. Didn’t even bother capsizing! Orca lead for most of the race but unfortunately miscalculated the water depth and parked while Matitai sailed by to take the race. Limeburner took the honours in the handicap stakes.

Summer Series Results

After a bit of a blog drought we are now going to have a deluge (global warming, increased volatility!). As I said in my R6 report, the series came down to the wire with Family Affair playing disrupter for half that race getting in front of Sub Zero. However, normal transmission resumed and by getting back to forth Sub Zero was able to close out the scratch results Well done me!). For anyone that has been following these results it will come as no surprise that it is a big congratulations to Rapscallion for taking the handicap honours.
Auckland Champs - 2018

Auckland Champs - 2018

In the weekend 24-25 March Taikata held its Auckland Frostbite Champs. The club welcomed a new sailor (who had obviously done it before) sailing a borrowed Boat (Asahi). Day 1 was a brisk wind giving some exciting moments for all. The scratch results were shared evenly among 3 boats. Days 2 saw a complete change with very light winds. The competition was then done to two with our visitor in Asahi taking the honours. With the new handicaps set for the second half of the season it was Limeburner that prevailed in the handicap stakes. We must acknowledge that Ashia was pushing here also taking out second place. Well done to all the sailors and thanks to the support personnel!
