The low tide after meant teamwork was required to remove all the boats from the water. Congratulations to Amber who got line honours. Limeburner made it to the photo gallery. Taikata will be launching from Opahi Bay as we did last year (NOT Sullivans Bay). The Mahurangi Cruising Club have published there sailing instructions and Taikata members will have received their entry forms by email. Bring your $20 entry fee the signed form on the day. Get there by around 10 for a good park and to soak in the atmosphere. Race start time for Frostbites is 13h10. Note that we are the second fleet starting. The main points of the sailing instructions are below (refer to the official document if you have any queries). Tides 28 January 2017 – Low Water 0211 – 0.74mHigh Water 0842 – 3.07mLow Water 1439 – 0.78mHigh Water 2055 – 2.98m RULES These races will be governed by the International Regulations For Preventing Collisions at Sea, and these Sailing Instructions.No Protests. A penalty of ten times the premature period will be applied to any boat over the line at the start.The organisers accept no responsibility for damage loss or injury. The Regatta is conducted by the Mahurangi Cruising Club.We draw competitor’s attention to the reefs at both ends of Saddle Island (Te Haupa). The reef at the northern end is marked by a red buoy and at the southern end a beacon. There are unmarked reefs extending from the eastern side of the island. WARNING! The Northern buoy may in some tide/wind conditions be out of position. The shelf extending south off Sadler Point is unmarked and sometimes not visible at high tide. Do not pass too close at high tide.This is a convivial event – all entrants must take all necessary steps to avoid collisions. ENTRIES Entries will be accepted at the tent at Sullivans Bay from 9 am to noon (or Scotts Landing in strong easterly conditions). DIVISIONS Start Time Entry FeeFrostbite (White Flag) 1310 hrs $20 COURSE COURSE # 1 Start in a south easterly direction, take Saddle Island to port then laid mark off Scotts Landing to port then Saddle Island to port then Scotts Landing mark to port to finish.The outer distance start buoy is not a fairway mark for the second leg of the course.The ODM will be moved closer to the start/finish boat for the finish.TE HAUPA TROPHY - FROSTBITE - MISTRAL • Once round the course only.NOTE • In strong easterly conditions the start/finish line will be moved up harbour off Scotts Landing. • Refer Course #2 COURSE # 2 TE HAUPA TROPHY - FROSTBITE – MISTRAL Alternative start area for strong easterly conditions. Twice round the course.Start in a south easterly direction, to a laid mark off Sullivans Bay to port then laid mark south east of outer distance mark to port then laid mark off Sullivans Bay to port then to finish. START LINE The start line will be between a buoy (ODM) and the Committee boat (Jane Gifford or substitute) flying a large Mahurangi Cruising Club flag, anchored off Sullivans Bay (or further up harbour in strong easterly conditions). The start buoy will be a red or yellow buoy. The flag colour will indicate the Division starting. START PROCEDURE 10 min hooter - Division flag colour flown on pole5 min hooterStart gun (or hooter in case of misfire) Division flag droppedPlease keep clear of the start area until after the 10 minute gun for your division. FINISH LINE The finish line will be as for the start line but shortened.The start buoy is not a fairway mark on the second lap of the course.No times will be recorded after 1700 hrs (5 pm).Note: It is the racing yachts responsibility to be recognised by the finish boat. If unsure confirm on Channel 77. HANDICAPS The Handicapper will allot each entry a TCF handicap. PRIZE GIVING Prize giving and barbeque at Scotts Homestead, Scotts Landing, commencing approximately 7.00 pm.Barbeques provided but no food or drink on sale. ALL EVENTS No extras. All headsails to be hanked to forestay. (Exception for traditional free flying jibs)No mizzen staysails or spinnakers. Headsails can be poled out. VHF: Channel 77 for any course change or other communications. SHORTENED COURSE If there is a lack of wind, the course will be shortened to one lap of the course instead of two by: an announcement on Channel 77 the flying of the Red Ensign on the start boat immediately below the MCC flag Mahurangi Regatta Season 2017-18 Opens De ja vu! A quiet start to the 2017 season with 5 hardy souls hitting the water in lively conditions. Congratulations to Big Mac for scoring the opening win. And to Kotiri for the handicap win (and 1st wooden boat). However, in what appears to be a reoccurring theme this season, the day didn’t provide quite enough wind resulting in a mid-race course change to the outer targets. In the end, Family Affair took it out by over four minutes with the chasing pack getting home over the following 25 minutes. Footprint led the fleet until some wayward gusts gave Sub Zero the opening to take the lead and hold on to the finish. In the handicap stakes, Kotiri sailed steadily to hold off Rapscallion. But that is the subject of a later post. A 10 boat fleet fronted in light and stable conditions. As commented by Matitia, Footprint applied a size 9 to our respective back-sides and raced away with a well deserved win. Such is the state of play that I get the reuse the next sentence. Rapscallion maintained the status quo by taking handicap honours. Note: handicaps are being revised as we sleep.
